Book Review: Wedded to War by Jocelyn Green

Charlotte Waverly is a privileged young New Yorker whose mother is concerned with finding her a suitable match. But Charlotte has other priorities, and with the onset of the War Between the States, she takes off to a daring endeavor: becoming a female nurse for wounded Union soldiers. Although her mother and her fancy suitor do not approve, she takes off to Washington with her younger sister, whose husband has enlisted as a soldier, to pioneer the field of nursing for women. The sisters and others working for the Sanitary Commission have to fight at first to be able to provide proper care for wounded soldiers.

Once the story gets going, it is full of plot turns, tales of corruption, human struggle, and a bit of romance. The author does an amazing job keeping the story moving and integrating the experiences of multiple characters. I also love her descriptive writing, which really helps to paint a mental picture of what was going on at that time in history.

Some of the characters are fictional, some were inspired by real people in history, and of course some were real. Wedded to War is a masterful piece of historical fiction based on true events. It is also Book 1 in the authors Heroines Behind the Lines series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and would recommend it to others who enjoy historical fiction.
