The House: Drywall and More Insulation

Drywall!!!! The last few weeks have been very exciting because we now have drywall, and can actually get a better picture of what the inside of the house looks like! We hired a crew to put up drywall, tape, mud, and texture. I won't show a picture of every room at every step but here are some highlights!

This is the entry to the laundry room. The wet bar will be to the left.

The kitchen - notice the raised portion of the ceiling is not drywalled in yet. They left a few hatches open so Bruce could spray cellulose insulation into the attic. We like to insulate a TON, because with hot Texas summers we'd like to keep AC costs down. The areas of the house that were previously drywalled and painted already had the extra insulation, but now it was time to add it to the freshly redone sections of the house.

Dining Room - you can see it is a work in progress!

Master Bathroom

More of the Master Bathroom. Scooter photo bombed as usual and you can see they weren't quite finished. The bathroom has Greenboard on the walls because bathrooms are damp areas, and the hardiebacker in the shower, or anywhere we will install tile.

When I went out to take pictures, Scooter had to inspect the house so he could smell everything that was different, and he got drywall dust all over his face! Silly Scooter!

At this point the crew we hired gave us a few days to get the insulation in the ceiling. I stayed out of the house for this part because of the whole pregnancy thing, and we didn't think it was wise to risk breathing in the airborn particles. I was involved (as was Mike) when we sprayed cellulose over the rest of the house three years ago and it is a miserable job!

Here are Mike and Bruce Sr. loading the machine. It basically breaks the stuff up and sucks it through a hose with plenty of air so Bruce could spray it where he needed it.

Here is Bruce hard at work. He looks pretty good here, but trust me, at the end of the day everyone was covered in a fine layer of dust! This part took two days, and we got help from family. Photos courtesy of Dana, my sister-in-law, since I was banned from being in the house!

When they were done, Bruce put drywall up to cover the opening, and the crew came back to tape.

This part looked pretty cool! Here is the master bedroom after the first day of taping. They basically go over all the seams and screw holes so the walls look flat.

The dining room

And the kitchen!

Here is the garage as well. Scooter accompanied me again for quality control!

The rest of the process took at least another week, and the crew finished texturing this past Monday. I took a few pictures once they were finished and we were putting plastic back on windows and doors so we could prime and paint!

The big box in the middle of the master bedroom is our awesome bathtub! I'll post some photos when we get it installed of course!

Nursery!

Bruce and his Dad putting plastic on one of the kitchen windows:

I found Boots hiding in the pantry! He finds little corners to chill out in while the guys work.

So that about covers it through Tuesday! Right now our family is helping Bruce put PAINT on the walls and I cannot express how excited I am! We ordered kitchen cabinets, which will be here by the end of June. But the color on the walls is already making it look so much more like the home we have been dreaming of! This is a very exciting time and I am so thankful for our family members that have been helping us so much, especially now that I have had to take a lesser role because I can't be breathing fumes or climbing up ladders while pregnant with our daughter!

I'll have pictures of the paint next time!

Book Review: One Realm Beyond by Donita K. Paul

Cantor D’Ahma has prepared his entire life to fulfill his destiny as a realm walker – one who jumps between worlds to provide guidance and protection. Finally ready to go on some adventures of his own, he leaves home on his first mission: to find a dragon who will be his companion for life. However, he quickly finds himself being followed around by a clumsy and pesky dragon named Bridger. He soon finds a few friends, ends up on an unplanned adventure, and begins to discover the corruption that has tainted his profession.

One Realm Beyond was a good, clean, fantasy adventure story! It makes great use of allegory and the author develops her characters well. Many times throughout the book, I found myself picturing the scenes in my head and thinking what a great movie this book would make! As with all the best fantasy novels, truths were imbedded in the story, such as the value of loyalty, treating others right, and self-sacrifice.

I loved this book, and I can’t wait to read the sequel. I predict that the series this book begins builds on previous books, so I would definitely recommend reading this one before starting the next one! If you like fantasy novels that present Christian truths, this book is for you!
